Role

The Heriot-Watt University is in charge for the WP4 (Exploitation and Outreach) and is involved in all the work packages of the project.  

The Herriot-Watt University has a leading and pioneering role in AUV and marine robotics in Europe, not only in science and technology development but also on advanced robotic technology transfer to the industry. Its expertise in compliant motion and contact control of couple AUV/manipulator systems, mapping, real-time planning for persistent autonomy, mission planning trough intuitive multimodal-interfaces is crucial not only in addressing the autonomous manipulation objectives of the project but also in providing complementary knowledge for the topic of long term navigation and ocean autonomous permanence.

R&D Centres

Edinburgh Centre for Robotics

The Edinburgh Centre for Robotics is a joint venture between Heriot-Watt and Edinburgh Universities, including a Centre for Doctoral Training, and the Robotarium national UK equipment facility for research into the interaction between robots, humans and autonomous systems. A key focus of the Centre is to produce innovation-ready graduates, who can not only make fundamental advances in the theory and development of robotics technology, but also have the skills to take these advances through to achieving impact in the form of new products and new companies.

Ocean Systems Laboratory

The Ocean Systems Laboratory is part of the Edinburgh Centre for Robotics and is a multidisciplinary science and engineering research centre that innovates, applies and teaches world class advances in autonomous systems, sensor modelling/processing, and underwater acoustic system theory/design for offshore, marine science, renewable energy and security applications.

It's research and training focus is on the broad classes of physical and cognitive interactions between robots, people, environments and autonomous systems. It has a 30 years’ pedigree in AUVs and marine robotics, creating internationally successful businesses and contributing to Marine Science & Technology Scotland.
